Pivoting an international small business community during pandemic uncertainty

According to CPA Practice Advisors “35% of small business owners can’t pay their rent,” the pandemic affects women-owned, LGBQT-owned and minority-owned businesses harder (49%).

In 2014, I started my own online business community, our Women’s Biz Coop for women, LGBQT and minority leaders. Although I had designed and written content for 3 websites before, I didn’t know how to fully develop a website from the start to beginning on WordPress. It was 100 interviews plus trial and error of figuring out what works from websites to product creation.

What started out as an idea to solve a problem became a 20,000 international community that was awarded the Best Business Center and Minority Business Leader by Philadelphia Business Journal in 2017!

Achiever Burn-Out

Then I hit a small bottom. I worked so hard to get there. I didn’t know what to do next. I felt burnt out and out of ideas. Sales plummeted as my passion died out.

I realized that I was so uber focused on doing, getting to the next level and achieving that next goal that I had sacrificed so much time with friends and family.

Slowing Down to Expand Across Country

I slowed down to spend more time with loved ones for 2 weeks at a time, while I traveled from East to the West Coast to see if I could replicate this idea with events across the country in 2018. Also the Mayor appointed me to Rebuild Oversight Committee to manage the process of alloting $500 million in city contracts for women-owned and/or minority-owned businesses to rebuild Philadelphian parks, schools, and libraries. In 2019 we received a Proclamation by the Mayor of Women’s Biz Coop Day and I hired 10 Directors from Philadelphia to Alaska and Hawaii.

Pivoting During a Pandemic

In 2020 COVID hit our diverse 20,000 international members, small business and non-profit community leaders, disproportionately hard with 49% of minority owners unable to pay the rent. As businesses closed and the economy slowed down, so did we.

During this time I created to launched an international Affiliate Marketing program recruiting 75 new affiliates a month.

Meditating on an honest reevaluation of myself, my new community needs and all 347 products and services with 15 product websites to marketing and sales funnels that I co-created, I decided to formally study User Experience at General Assembly to better serve my community and update my technical, design and leadership skills.

  • I love to co-create – bring ideas into form.
  • I love to solve the biggest problems – and make the world a better place.
  • I love to ship products and services that put a smile on people’s and users’ faces.

What They Say

Naida, Student Success Manager

My opinion is VERY favorable of Judi and I have enjoyed getting to know her through her time here at General Assembly. I only wish we had been able to meet in person, as I’m sure she and I would have bonded from the start. She seems a kindred spirit with a dedication to helping other people improve their lives and the lives of their communities.

Zavier Lowe, Design Lead, City of Boston Project

Judi is such a great person to be around and she is very knowledgeable.”

Sutherland Carter, Ideate & Prototype Design, LinkedIn for Artist Projects

It was a pleasure to work with Judi. I never had to worry about the details because I could rely on her to ensure the integrity of the project was never sub-par.

Mathew Tharakan, SEPTA Manager

“Judi interviewed me about my career in public transportation and community engagement. The program went viral and had thousands of viewers. Her skill in organizing community events and developing new initiatives are exceptionally outstanding.”
